INTRODUCTION
Research in academia is increasingly present through the development of projects, papers, exhibitions and events promoted by universities and colleges. The main objective of this movement is, precisely, to bring students closer to scientific reality, improving more and more the “doing of science” in different areas of knowledge.
From a historical and elitist construction of science, a false reality has been created, which restricts scientific research to test tubes and microscopes, keeping students away from scientific reality precisely because they don’t believe they are part of the context. However, the time has come for the scenario to change. Mainly after the mandatory implementation of the End of Course Work, students appropriate scientific research and increase their repertoire in the academic environment.
It is essential, therefore, that higher education institutions themselves encourage and instigate students to develop research projects, and it is also of utmost importance that professors actively participate in providing guidance and, above all, inspiration and motivation. The more the professors themselves are engaged in science, the more students will be enthusiastic about the possibility of contributing empirically to their respective fields of knowledge.
Objectives
To present the experience lived by the nursing students in the development of the academic activity of educational action to women’s health, through the discipline of nursing in women’s health.
METHOD
This is a descriptive study, of the type experience report from the first scientific exhibition on women’s health proposed in the context of the discipline “Nursing in Women’s Health” of the undergraduate course in nursing at the Faculdade Anhanguera de Jacareí, in the state of São Paulo. It was developed in October 2022, in celebration of the month of breast cancer awareness: “pink October”.
The project was planned for the last week of October, specifically in the last two days, 28 and 31 respectively, so that we could reach a larger audience during these two days, since on Fridays and Mondays the college has a higher flow of students.
The main theme of the show was the global action in women’s health in the scope of gynecology and obstetrics, where the students developed their presentations around this theme.
The project was planned by the supervising teacher and the person responsible for the discipline, and had the support of the nursing coordination and the college’s psychology nucleus. The collaboration with the psychology teachers brought themes related to the mental health of women in the puerperal period and issues that also involve obstetric pathologies.
The project included morning and evening students from different semesters, but with the discipline of Nursing in Women’s Health taking place in both periods.
A total of two meetings were held before the exhibition, with the following dynamics: in an initial moment, with the students guiding the methodological construction of banners and in searches for theoretical references for the elaboration of the same; in a second meeting we had as a proposal the search and guidance for the elaboration of the scientific article that we would submit to an international journal, in the city of Buenos Aires - Argentina.
During the development of the scientific exhibition, it was identified the need of the students in relation to the construction of banners for exhibition and the elaboration of the scientific article, as well as the formatting in the norms of the Brazilian Association of Technical Norms (ABNT).
Therefore, the idea arose to bring the opportunity to develop presentations at the college to other students of psychology, law, engineering, and nursing courses, in order to stimulate scientific production in the academic field and also to value the nursing students in activities involving women’s health.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The discipline of nursing in women’s health has like main objective to know and understand about the main care, complications and pathologies in the gravidic-puerperal cycle, as well as the application of health care in the various phases of women’s life cycle.
The importance of interdisciplinarity among nursing students and other colleagues from different areas, provides students with a greater involvement in learning and the scientific look to their training, becomes more palpable. The work in the health area is essential for relationships and subjectivity, as it requires specific skills and quality training from professionals so that they can be perceived as professionals with various specific and distinct knowledge in the development of transformative practices in their daily lives.(1)
The exhibition of scientific work in the institution of higher education allows the contact between teachers, students and other professionals to have an interdisciplinary involvement. However, interdisciplinary involvement allows the exchange of information, of constantly updated knowledge in the academic institution. The participation of the community is essential to promote dialogue and research in health, since understanding the implications in public health brings positive results for the population.(2)
The event was attended by professors from the anhanguera college from different areas of concentration, where we had a homogeneous group for the evaluation of works in women’s health. We had the participation of professors from the nursing, psychology, biology, engineering, physiotherapy, pedagogy, and law courses. They received an evaluation form for each banner to score notes on criteria such as: the quality of the banner and the sequence of the items allocated for the presentation of the work, posture in front of the presentations to the community, the clarity and objectivity of their communications, the presentation of the appropriate methodology and the clarity of the problematization and objectives of the proposed work, emphasis on the results and expected outcomes. The security and mastery of the contents, the correct grammar, the presentation within the given time limit and the mastery, clarity and security in the answers were criteria that made the difference in the presentation of the I Scientific Exhibition on Women’s Health (figure 1).
Figure 1. Evaluation of the Banners by the participating teachers, Jacareí, October 2022 - Brazil
In total, there were 8 groups, 5 of which belonged to the night classes and 3 groups from the morning classes of the undergraduate nursing course.
The topics approached were themes involving women’s health in several areas of their cycle, including approaching pathologies and health in general (table 1).
Table 1. Themes covered in the scientific exhibition, Jacareí, October 2022 |
Feelings of women with interrupted pregnancies. Literature review |
Indigenous population and nursing: a review of women’s health in Brazil |
Integrative review of the nursing team’s approach to perinatal bereavement |
Puerperal depression: the lack of a support network for women |
Relationships between diagnoses and nursing interventions for women with HELLP syndrome |
Women’s health protocol proposal: nursing team attributions in cases of chorioamnionitis |
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM): behaviors of the nursing team |
Integrative review: nurse’s attributions in cases of placental accretism |
All the exhibited works were also evaluated by the students of several courses of the Higher Education Institution (IES), who marked on an evaluation form which work they liked the most. At the end of all the evaluations, the three best evaluated works received the Merit Award: Lucila Coca Leventhal.
There were a total of 77 evaluations by students, where each sheet had a mark about the chosen work, and 41 grades from teachers who evaluated the banners. The average score was 8,95 points. The best evaluated works were: Women‘s health protocol proposal: nursing team attributions in cases of chorioamnionitis, relations between diagnoses and nursing interventions for women with HELLP syndrome and indigenous population and nursing: a review about women‘s health in Brazil. In all we had more than 300 views of the papers in the two days of the event.
After the exhibition we obtained some results that exposed the nursing course in evidence in the city of Jacareí. The I Exhibition of Women’s Health was news in the website of the Regional Council of Nursing of the state of São Paulo, with a note on its website and its social networks, in the month of October and November 2022.(3)
The student who had the best evaluated work commented on her experience in having participated in the scientific exhibition and could contribute with her experience in presenting her scientific work.
“This work is a proposal for a women’s health protocol with the attributions of the nursing team in cases of patients with chorioamnionitis. In the beginning, we noticed that many people did not have the real knowledge of what the disease was, as well as its severity. During the development we also realized that there was no protocol or guidelines to be followed regarding the care and necessary care to pregnant women with the disease,” says Daphny during her presentation at the Brazilian Congress on Health Research and Education (CONPEDS)“.
The results obtained could also be seen after the publication of three papers in a Brazilian congress held in Fortaleza - CE, where the abstracts of these articles were published and exposed in the form of oral presentation by the students themselves.

After the exhibition of the banners the papers were corrected, evaluated by the responsible teacher and submitted to an Argentinean journal called: Salud, Ciencia y Tecnología, where they were published. Other papers will be submitted and corrected to be sent to the international journal.
The undergraduate nursing students had an incredible and unique experience in their training, they discovered that nursing is done through science, they had the opportunity to present their academic work in congresses, internal events and submit it to an international journal. As a teacher and creator of the event I was able to give them the experience of being researchers and working with scientific evidence, I wanted to bring to the students the essence of research, because we know that some nurses do not publish and do not present in events (figure 2).
This idea of the event was precisely to tell them that nursing is not only done through hospitals, UBS, or any health care institution, but that nurses can and should also be researchers and publish their work.
CONCLUSION
From the above, it is concluded that the nursing department of the Anhanguera College, Jacareí unit, conducted its first scientific exhibition with excellence and dedication, bringing the student body closer to the scientific community and, moreover, motivating them to continue with the elaboration of research and intervention projects.
Moreover, the first show encouraged not only students from the nursing department, but also faculty from other departments to increase their scientific productions, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The first scientific exhibition, in this way, had as its main consequence the inspiration and motivation of the faculty and, mainly, of the student body.
